Implanon removal

I had the implanon removed this morning, they actually let me take pictures (one of the doctors/nurses even did it for me!), and it was no big thing. Nothing at all like this. Without further ado...

So that's my arm, surrounded by a white towel thing, and two pairs of doctor hands, and some scarry looking pliers. Guess how many doctors/nurses it takes to remove an implanon? 4. Well, some of them were just watching. It was cool though, because I got to ask them lots of hard questions about birth control.

And there's the little bugger coming out. Doesn't it look like the pliers are grabbing onto a nipple? Fortunately for me, that was not the case.

And the aftermath. The whole thing, including cleaning and numbing, probably took 10 minutes, and I hardly felt a thing.

It *does* look like a nipple in that photo! And I'm so glad it wasn't like that youtube video.... I couldn't even watch. Ugh. Well congrats. What exciting things did you learn from asking lots of questions?? Should I be getting the hell off the pill?

The youtube video looks like the "fish around in the arm until you find it" method, and I think on me they used "use teamwork to pop the thing out and *then* grab it with the pliers" method. Although I'm not 100% sure since I wasn't watching, because I'm a big baby ever since the IUD incident.

I asked them why it's ok to not have a period for several months on purpose. They said when you're on hormones, the uterine lining doesn't build up. There's just a thin lining that builds up for the first month, but it pretty much stops after that, and it just hangs out. I thought of the lining as "waste" that needs to get out of there but I guess it's not, as long as it's not continually accumulating. Interesting. Also they said it's the decreased cell turnover that reduces your cancer risk, so in that way it's actually beneficial.

Oh my god, you know what I just thought of? I should have kept it! Then we could have SEM pics of the IUD and the implanon!! We could have an entire close-up contraceptive art gallery! What was I thinking???

Right, because you don't have an inquisitive mind. A real dull one you are. Yeah.

If you think this is weird, you should see the IUD pics. Maybe I'll do a blog post on that.

Dammit! I wish I'd thought of it too! Well meanwhile, rubiy, the other photos are here. The first 16 are of the IUD.

And Invis - thanks for asking them about the no-period-for-months deal, I've been wondering about that too. It makes me nervous, but it sounds like it might be ok... Hmm.

I know this is an old blog but I've been googling Implanon and I am interested in it myself. Would you suggest it for anyone? The removal seems like it would be the hardest part, and you said it wasn't so bad. So how was the insertion? Any info you're willing to share would be awesome!!

Hi belle, I thought implanon was ok. I had it taken out because it gave me bad acne. But that doesn't happen to everyone. It's nice to not have to think about taking a pill. Insertion was fine, there was some pain but really no big deal. If you have more questions feel free to email me at invismurphy[at]gmail[dot]com.

Thanks so much! I don't know anyone personally who has Implanon and it helps to talk to someone who has had it. Reading all the info on the site just isn't the same!
